New Year, New Goals
With the end of a year and start of a new year, we have the opportunity to make new goals for ourselves and set ourselves up for success in the coming year. If your teen has been struggling to stay organized and meet their academic goals in high school, now is a great time to work on goal-setting and come up with a new approach to their learning for the new year.

Choose Attainable Goals. Take Action Steps.
We all tend to make New Year’s resolutions, but do many of us actually stick to them? The key is to take action steps. Choose attainable goals and get started on them right away. This is where a planner comes in handy. If your high schooler isn’t already using a planner, gift them one for the holidays! Together, you can work on setting the planner up to include academic and social responsibilities and deadlines. If you’ve been a bit unorganized yourself, this is a great activity you can do together to get you both on the right track for 2022.
Step up your Game
If your teen hasn’t been happy with their academic performance so far in the school year, use this time to create a fresh start and goals for the remainder of the year. Some great things to suggest are: attending extra help sessions, working in study groups with peers, hiring a tutor, setting up study breaks in their planner, and making sure all deadlines for homework are met. Try to leave the past year behind and start the new year off with a new mindset and determination. During the winter break is a great time to also set up a study area in your home that is comfortable, well-lit, and let your teen help decorate. This will get them excited about heading back to school and working toward their new goals.
Try New Things!
Make 2022 the year to try new things! Encourage your teenager to join new clubs, take up a hobby or sport, sign up for pottery lessons, or anything they’ve had an interest in. The new year is a great time to explore and learn new things, all while making new friends in the process. There are also a lot of opportunities to give back to the community through various community organizations. Many schools have key clubs or food banks that students can help out with. Maybe even choose an activity as a family and try something new! Were you always interested in hiking your local area but never got around to it? Now’s the time to give it a try! Make 2022 a great year by choosing to add some new activities and fun into your routine.
Take time to Reflect
Take some time to reflect on the past year and all that you and your teenager are grateful for. Make it a point to say that while we can always strive to do better and improve, don’t forget to appreciate how far you’ve come. Encourage your teenager to make a list of all they have accomplished over the past year. They may not even realize how many great things they have achieved! Let them know that heading into this new year they have the power to achieve all their goals and more. Their future is limitless!
